Games & Campaigns Info

At this point, we are only playing tournament-style 40k games. This are 1,850 encounters using tournament scenarios. Not only they are fun, but they help us gathering speed for RTTs. In the future (once the site is 100% up) the Mordheimer will organize a 'Story Based, Limited Resources Campaign."

Warhammer 40k, 5th Edition Pre-Release Game!

On July 6th, we got together and played a 1,250 points game using the pre-released 5th Edition rules for WH40k. The game was Tau vs Necrons. Our lists were not made to 'win at all costs' but to maximize the different aspects of the game under the new rules.

On the Tau side... plenty of Fire Warriors (3 Squads) and lots of vehicular support. On the Necron side, 2 Squads of Warriors and the Nightbringer. Yes... I know! It seemed cheesy to bring the Nightbringer to a 1,250 point game, but the new rules would benefit those with a better composition rather than those with few, but powerful units. I just wanted to test that... and the Run!

The Mission was to take 3 pieces of terrain, and we immediately found some issues with the wording on the placement of the markers (what if there is no terrain that just not cover part of the deployment zone or 12" from the table edge?) Nothing major... we agreed of objectives and moved on. The Tau deployed first and, as per the new rules, took the first turn. The test with blast weapons was brutal! No more partials! We then noticed that the rules were not very clear... how much of the base inside the template was 'inside'? We had a model in which 1/64th of the base was under the template... was that 'inside'? On 4th Edition this would had not even been considered for a partial hit. Again, rules were not cleared. We counted it in... just in case.

Then we discovered how nerfed out the Gauss Weapons became against vehicles. It is really hard to do almost anything to vehicles. Also we found out that the Tau Displacement Fields on vehicles will make them even better than what they are! This combination inspired me to create this motivational poster with a picture I found in CMON. Click on the poster to see it full view... really funny! The Run! was not as good as I thought. The Nightbringer got closer quickly, but still is not worth the points.

The surprise of the evening for me was the Assault! It has become brutal... gone are the days of skewed combats. Now, large numbers of weaker/lucky Squads (like my Warriors) can take assault specialists (Kroot) if they managed to inflict more wounds. Weakening Assault and Shock Troops before hand-to-hand combat still a great idea, but combat seems way faster now. This is balanced with the lack of sweeping advances... the fleeing combatants could regroup and assault again, unless the victorious takes time and confronts them again.

The Necrons Will Be Backs were remarkably accurate... as well as the Saves. They were dominating the table for some time, but we all knew it was a matter of time until the Tau claimed their deserved victory by phasing -out the Necrons.

Games at the Hamster Hous

We played on April 5th, 2008 again at the famous Hamster Hous. Hamster has a pretty sweet setup in the garage, with two tables and plenty of terrain. More than a wargamer, he is a true hobbyist. Click on this panoramic picture (as well as on the others) to see them in full glory!

Here you can see part of the setup. Hamster (at far left) is busy making (more) models. A guest showed up (what can I say... Hamster is a popular guy!) and showed up some cool conversions. Justin befriends... or shall I say recruit him in his quest against the False Emperor. On the far right, you can see Hamster's store displays.

PhotobucketAlmost unnoticed, Necrons warriors were getting creamed by the forces of Chaos in the main table on a Warhammer 40k encounter. Justing and the Mordheimer were fighting for a central objective, it was a festival of living metal and puss... puss winning! On the picture below, notice how the Demon Prince (lower-left) blatantly walk about behind the Necron forces, while a Greater Demon (big purple worm) put the Necron Lord and his Wraith retinue to run for their Necrtyric lives... literally! In shame, the Mordheimer swore revenge... somehow, somewhere! The Demon Prince just laughed... 'Bring it on Mr. Robbotto!'

PhotobucketBut don't fret it! Hamster and David had a classical Warhammer Fantasy clash: Dwarves vs Orcs! The game was small (only 1000 points) as David is just learning, but he gave the veteran a run for his money! The Green Tide was unstoppable, but the Dwarves were unmovable!

PhotobucketNotice the Goblin Wolf Riders (above on lower-right corner; right on upper-left corner) attempting to flank the Dwarves... while the Troll Slayers prepare to take the enemy head on!

PhotobucketMeanwhile, the Warboss (above on upper-left corner; left on lower-left corner) and his Chariot charged the enemy on the hill! It is WAAGGHHHH!

All in all, thanks for a couple great games. See you next time!
