Following the dedication of Hamster, we have committed with 2D10 Games to run the next Warhammer 40,000 Tournament! The Mordheimer will be running the tournament, under the guidance of Hamster, in Saturday August 30, 2008.

We will be running a 5th Edition 1,500 points three games event, which promises to be very interesting!  We are committed to make each event  better than the last one. This time we will start with clearly defined judging parameters (especially for Appearance and Composition) and we have added a prize category! We may have players from several parts of Florida, including Naples, Fort Myers , Tampa, Orlando and Miami!

To say the least, we are very exited! Expect a full report, with PLENTY of pictures (unless I forget my camera for the 3rd time in a row!) Meanwhile, why not join us at 2D10 Games' forums... here!

2D10 Games' First WH40k Tournament (June 28, 2008)

Well... we survived! We have finally find a store to play in Fort Myers! The owners of 2D10 Games are very receptive to our input on what gamers need and how we could support their business...  this makes us want to work even harder with them!

One of our members, Hamster, have been working with them organizing Warhammer Fantasy games every Sunday. They had a tournament, and liking the experience they decided to go crazy and launch a 40k Event in June. The store has good space to play. Hamster and the organizers managed to have 5 tables with plenty of terrain waiting for the players! Three of our members assisted: Dblahag (with his Demons), Justin (with his Plague Chaos Space Marines and the Mordheimer (with his Necrons). We had 4 other veterans show up... a great turn-out, specially considering that the area was in a 40k dry-spell for quite some time and there was minimal advertising. Hell... even I did not posted the event until it was over! :P

Everyone had their armies painted... well almost everyone! Dblahag had 3 unpainted models... his Greater Demon conversions! They are so unique, that everyone spend lots of time admiring them. They are that good. I will make a Gallery for his Army pretty soon. You deserve to see it. The event started on time... but since we had an odd number of players, there was a consensus to roll to see who would stay out each round. While we were all in agreement, it stroke us a little odd how points would be worked out. Of course, the system was adequate and we were all happy... but the seed and desire to improve the system was planted deep within us.

The games and the scenarios were SUPERB! Hamster did a great job... even when GW throw him a hell of a curve! Their new website sucks! Harder to navigate and the good stuff is lost! Regardless, it was a great event! We had lots of fun and made some new friends. The next 40k Tournament will be in August, and The Society will definitely be more involved!

Overall... we said goodbye to Warhammer 40k 4th Edition with style!

I will post pictures of the Event later, as well as comments from the other players!

Tournament Standings

  1. Mordheimer - Necrons
  2. Marc Scalise - Chaos Space Marines
  3. Justin - Plague Chaos Space Marines

On the Mordheimer's side...

1st Game: Necrons vs Space Marines

Funny, that at that before we were given our first opponent I was talking to this fellow and I told him "I don't expect to do that good... my goal is just to make others not win by a landslide!" He laughed and responded, 'Well, you and me both!" That is Sean for you... and all around nice guy, with a very nice Space Marine Army!

In our game, the main objective was to take the Transportation Beacon on the Center of the Table. The Space Marines took the initiative, and entrenched themselves in some ruins. The Necrons advance slowly, but steadily. Marine scouts attempted to infiltrate on the Necrons flanks... but the snipers were no match for the Gauss fire. The assault scouts fell to the assault of the Wraiths, mainly because their support got lost on the Emperor's Fingers. On a bizarre move, the Wraiths assaulted some Terminators alone, and saw their demise pretty quickly.

Meanwhile, the Astartes troop support was having a horrible day. The Vindicator could not hit anything and the Land Raider attracted some heavy fire. The warmachines was severely damaged, but the Spirit of the Machine took over and moved it to safety. After a quick fix, it moved to the front line dispensing massive bolter fire. The Monolith fell from the upper atmosphere fairly late on the engagement but landed behind enemy lines. The Vindicator crew attempted to shot it (at three inches away) and still missed! The Gauss weapons put most of the Marine Squads below 50% capacity, thus forcing the Marines to retreat and concede victory to the Necrons.

Like customary, my Tomb Spyders attracted lots of enemy fire and the Lord on the Destroyer Body had a Hand to Hand field day against some scouts! The game took a long time, but we were joking and having an over all great time! Over all, the most fun I had the whole day!

On terms on what I could do better; like always my impatience is my demise. Sending the Wraiths to attack the Terminators was a big mistake. I could had blow them (or at least soften them up) with some Gauss Rapid Fire. All in all, the dice did not favored Sean at all... so many 1's!  :P

2nd Game: Necrons vs Plague Chaos Space Marines

The 2nd game was against Justin's Walking-Rot-Bags... wow! They ALWAYS give me a hard time. Not only Justin is a great player, but he tweaked his list very well! My goal was to loose by the closest margin possible! This Mission, we had to hunt for an Ammo Crates buried in the ruins of a devastated city.

Necrotyr sensors detected the Ammo Crates inside a ruined Administratum building. Upon reaching the location, Necrons noticed that Fallen Marines had already closed in on the objective. The Necrons had held some units in Reserve, but the Plague Marines were in full force; escorted by not one, but two Greater Demons! Obliriators took high ground and started pounding merciless the waves of Necron Warriors. The Lord on the Destroyer Body and his Wraith retinue charged a Squad of Plague Marines, but no matter the damage they cause, the Sons of Nurgle continued their onslaught!

On a tactical maneuver, the Plague Marines attempted to outflank the Necrons. This effort fell short of successful, as the relentless waves of Necrons moved closer to the objective. The Monolith landed, with the aid of the previously captured Transportation Beacon, few paces away from the Ammo Crates. It became a stale-mate. Necrons and Marines continue to ignore damage capable of killing the strongest of human heroes. Slowly but steadily, one of the Greater Demons was vanquished as well as a group of Obliriators. Scarabs took down the Marine Predator Tank.

At the end, Papa Nurgle took only a marginal victory. While they controlled the ruined city, the Necrons escaped with the Ammo Crate.

Justin is a great player! I have been massacred by his Chaos Marines plenty of times... always brutally! This time, I was paying attention. While I still can not defeat him, this time his victory was by a close margin. I still have lots to learn on how to deal with the Plague Marines and their evil Feel No Pain! I beleive that the trick is to ignore the Marines, and concentrate in other high profile units (like the Obbies and Demons. After that, just concentrate in one unit at a time. Maybe just use other weapons that would negate the FNP.

3rd Game: Necrons vs. Khorn Chaos Space Marines

Ohhh, I remember the 1st time my Necrons were 'demoniacally rapped' by Khorn! The pain! I knew I was in for a great fight... specially after seeing all the big machines. The objective in this mission was to destroy the Enemy General... and the Commander was something to behold!

Sensors picked the enemy in a desolated field, so the Necrons landed quickly for a major offensive. Unfortunately, the Chaos Marines were very well prepared. The Necrons deployed in an open formation, while their enemy was packed in for the kill.

The Chaos transport quickly moved down the field... but were met with the furry of the Gauss Weapons. The General's transport, a corrupted Land Raider, as well as a Rhino fell down to the Necron weapon fire... but the Berserkers managed to take center stage. They started dispensing massive damage to the Necron Warriors. As much damage they were taking, many continue to self repair. To the detriment of the Chaos Marines, several of the shock troops got isolated, and were quickly dispatched by support fire.

The Monolith arrived to the center of the field of battle. With little worries of being destroyed by the enemy infantry, it used some of the vehicle wreckage to block and isolate the Enemy General. The Lord on the  Destroyer Body and his retinue of Wraiths quickly moved inside enemy territory. Scarabs held a force of Hounds and even a Bloodthirster, long enough to have all the army move away from their reach. Warriors flooded the field with Gauss fire, taking the General down. Once the battlefield was conquered, the Lord smirked at the fallen enemy from a distance.

Another great game! I won, mostly based on luck than on my strategy. Granted it was not all bad, the Chaos Heavy Support could not pick their own noses even if the Chaos gods had mutated them to have 6 arms with 20 fingers in each hand! That allowed the Destroyers to pick on enemy Squads fairly easily. Another bit of luck was that the Bloodthirster was summoned to the right flank... and I moved my army away from him while he was dispatching some Scarabs! The Monolith block was indeed a very good move, as it isolated the Commander from reaching hand-to-hand combat... were he would had indeed be superior! I enjoyed the game, but at the end of the day I was kindda tired, and ran out of jokes!

VICTORY!

At the end, I was declared Overall Winner. WTF? I would had bet good money that either Dblahag's Demons  or Justin's Plague Marines would take First Place. The Demons were using the enemy as speed-bumps, and well... Justin beat me! After asking the Judges, it was a close call. While I got favored in some of the soft scores, Dblahag lost some points in Appearance because his Greater Demon conversions were not finished nor painted. Knowing him, that will never happen again! I got lucky... that is all. I don't expect to ever happen again! I will use the prize money to get my copy of the 5th Edition Rules! Yeah baby!

Dragon Square Tournament Road Trip! (May 31, 2008)

We are going in a Road Trip! Yeap, while some of our members regularly travel far (over 100 miles) to play in WH40k tournaments, this is the first 'official' road trip! We will be visiting The Silver Dragon Square in Miami, Florida to participate in their monthly Warhammer 40k Tournament on May 31st!

There will be four of us... packed-in like sardines holding to our armies... hopefully they won't start shooting at each other in an Apocalyptic mayhem! We will be attempting to overtake the powers that be at The Silver Dragon Square! Will post extensive battle reports and pictures after we return... stay tuned!

UPDATE:

The Event came and went. The road trip was very nice... THANKS JUSTIN! We were excited, ready to celebrate Demon Day! Yes, Dblahag's Demons were ready to come out and play. Poor unfortunate souls!

We were the 1st to arrive to the store, and we quickly setup. We want to thank Israel, Rudy and the rest of the staff. The event ran smoothly (in terms of time... which is always hard to do) and over all I found it very entertaining. The Staff (specially Israel) was very courteous. The store is a very nice place indeed! If you are in Miami, stop by!

I will post pictures of the Event later, as well as comments from the other players!

Tournament Standings

  1. Alex - Necrons
  2. Brian - Eldar
  3. Cesar - Dark Angels
  4. Nick - Chaos Space Marines
  5. Merdain1504 - Dark Angels
  6. Dblahag - Demons
  7. Justin - Chaos Space Marines
  8. Mordheimer - Necrons
  9. Rudy - Tyranids
10. Rollo - Orks
11. Josh - Blood Angels
12. Matt - Original Space Marine Chapter

On the Mordheimer's side...

1st Game: Necrons vs Orks

My opponent was Rollo. His Orks gev full justice to the term Green Tide. He had his boyz on trukks and move quickly for the kill. The Necron Destroyers proove very effective vs the Zappa Guns, but at the end the Warriors were no match for the Orks' Choppas. At one point it was like looking at a bad Nickolodeon show... EVERY Necron was covered in green. Even a lonly Scarab (yes, one base) got assaulted by some Orkies under the pressure of the Waaghh! At the last round, I got over excited and made a tactical error... I got greedy and tried to take his HQ Unit... it cost me my Lord on Destroyer body AND a Tomb Spider. Rollo won, a Minor Victory.

If I had just attacked another unit (a sure win) I would had not given over 260 points, I would had taken that weaker Ork unit (maybe 100 points) and taken a piece of terrain (part of the mission objectives). This would had either made the game a Draw, or a Minor Victory for my Necrons. The game was very good.

2nd Game: Necrons vs Blood Angels

The 2nd game was against Josh's Blood Angels. He was an EXCELLENT adversary. The table was very nice, but the surface was kind of rubbery... dice were bouncing everywhere! We both mis-understood the scenario... we thought we were fighting for quarters instead of the board's center! This changed our game dynamic, and just by pure luck I had the center of the board at the end of the game. While my tactics proved sound, the Death Company made a mockery of the Necrons. The 1st Hand-to-Hand combat was brutal... Josh rolled 11 Rending vs 11 Necrons... on the next turn he rolled a pathetic 10 Rending vs 11 Necrons! Poor Warriors! The good thing for me is that with a Res Orb and the Monolith closed, I managed to roll some Will Be Backs.

At the end the Destroyers managed to pick at the Baals. I won just because I happened to have several units in the center of the board... we BOTH thought it was Table Quarters. Hey... at least I have an excuse, English is my 2nd language!

3rd Game: Necrons vs. Dark Angels

Merdain1504's Dark Angels... WOW! He had a superbly balanced (and powerful) list! The best thing about playing one of my Brothers is that there was no hold's barred! Mason really knows how to maximize each point of his list with non-cheesy-over-powerful units. Also, he is a master tactician, adapting quickly to the changes in the battlefield, managing to exploit every single opening to the best of his advantage. Simply stated... I got schooled! Like a true Son of the Lion, his army was methodical (almost surgical) in all his movements and attacks. He found every single tactical advantage there was, and took advantage of it.

Like always, I pulled the Veiled-and-Shoot move... blow up a Land Raider! Then he shot at the Necrons and put down 4 out of 12. Then he assaulted them and put down 3 more. I failed my LD test... and EVERYONE got crushed. Including the Lord! From there, it was downhill for the Living Machines. Our efforts to put his Squads below 50% were fairly successful, but at the end I got phased-out by the power of the Holy Bolter.

We both agreed, there was NOTHING he could have done different to accelerate his victory. It was a perfect game for him (besides the occasional bad dice!) On my side... well I could have done 3 or 4 things to make things last to the end... I got much to learn. At the end, I was even pleased that my Brother got the Massacre points. It may have hurt me on the final tally, but Merdain1504 deserved to win!

Adepticon '08 (April 11th - 13th, 2008)

Dblahag send us this wonderful review of Adepticon 2008, from his personal spies who attended the event! Just for you to know, this world class gaming event took place in the Crowne Plaza Hotel (Rosemont, IL) during April 11th - 13th, 2008. So for us that missed it, here is the scoop! Thanks to his good friends CJ and Toby (who played a game against the events' Guest of Honor, Phil Kelly and his Orks) for the information!

CJ and Toby wrote:
“Thats right, that is Phil Kelly himself, with Graham McNeil beside him, and Phils teamate, playing against Toby Donaker and C.J. Robinson during the Team Tournament. Was lucky enough to be on their team as well and watch the coolness of such a game for our first Adepticon. The score sheets are next with his signiture on it and the one that is sideways just says after it "Great game Toby / CJ!"

[EDIT: For those of us who are missing on knowing who Phil Kelly is, well here is a link to his interview for Adepticon. Basically... a great Games Workshop game designer, writer (his works include the 4th Edition Eldar Codex as well as the Tyranid Codex... he even co-authored the 3rd Ed Codex Eye of Terror) and painter. His models are everywhere... specially those black & yellow Tyranids, pictured below!) So he has been one of my role-models, and I didn't know it! Go figure! - The Mordheimer]

Definitely, CJ and Toby, got a super treat to a great game! Here are copies of his score sheets.

Gotta love this 'Nids!

Also, Dblahag send us a bunch of pics from another friend who played in the team event with all Dark Angels lists and placed 17th of 100 teams. Here is a great Dark Angels Army photo to tease you! It's best if you check his web album slide-show here!!!

Last, YouTube seems to be littered with some Adepticon 08 videos. Here is one to get you started... but there are MANY out there to watch. The one below features a 40k Griffon's Battle Barge... amazing! Notice the LCD screen at the end!

As of yet none of them have a full personal review but I know that they were given a bunch of goodies at the door and access too much more. Also the person who controlled the objective marker in each of the first three games got to take it home! I’m making plans for next year now!

"OWNED" Warhammer 40k Tournament - March 15-16,2008

This tournament was presented by Trade Caravan Games. The1st Placed was to receive a real "GRAND" prize of $1,000.00 cash!

The results were in on this tournament. We had two members of The Golden Bolter Society participating; Dblahag (with his Chaos Marines) and Justing (with his Blood Angels). There were 12 players, 5 games in 2 days.

  • 1st Pace: Brian Poole (Eldar)
  • 2nd Place: Alan Hernandez (Eldar)
  • 3rd Place: Dblahag [Aaron H.] (Chaos Space Marines)!!!

Yes, our very own Dblahag not only won 3rd place (by 2 points) but also he won Best Painted/Converted/Themed Army... and it is not to be doubted! All his models have wonderful detailed conversions, from his wolf-themed demons to his 'bikers' (actually are wold riders), from his 'Marks of Chaos' to his Greater Demon. Ahhh... and not forget his amazing Chaos Objective marker! (BWT... I built & painted that one! - Mordheimer) Congratulations!

For more details, photos and more check out Dblahag's Battle Report here!
